Cultural Exchange and Empowerment: EHC’s Chung Cake Making Event

On February 5th, 2024, EHC organized a session to make “Chung cake,” a traditional Vietnamese rice cake, with the participation of volunteers from the United Kingdom and local women. The event aimed to foster cultural exchange and provide the volunteers with a deeper understanding of Vietnamese traditional New Year dishes in general, as well as those specific to the highland region. Additionally, the event served as a means to support vulnerable and economically disadvantaged women in the area by hiring them to participate in the process and allocating a portion of the profits to them.

During the session, the volunteers had the opportunity to learn the intricate process of making “Chung cake,” from selecting the finest ingredients to meticulously wrapping the cakes in banana leaves. Through hands-on experience, they gained insight into the significance of this traditional delicacy, which symbolizes the harmony of earth, rice, and the spiritual connection with ancestors during the Lunar New Year celebration.

Moreover, the event held a greater purpose beyond cultural exchange. By engaging local women in the process and providing them with employment opportunities, EHC contributed to empowering and supporting these vulnerable members of the community. The funds generated from the sale of the “Chung cake” were allocated to benefit these women, providing them with financial assistance and fostering economic independence.

This initiative by EHC exemplifies their commitment to cultural preservation, community engagement, and social responsibility. By promoting cultural understanding and providing economic support, EHC not only celebrated Vietnamese traditions but also created a platform for meaningful connections between volunteers and local residents, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual respect.
